There is a real drive for Great Britain to improve the energy efficiency of its housing stock…
New properties have much better energy efficiency than older ones. The majority of the existing housing stock is more than 60 years old, and around one in five properties are more than 100 years old.
Building new, more efficient homes will increase the average efficiency of the whole housing stock. However, relying on new homes to ‘drag up’ the average would mean slow progress and leave any households living in much less efficient homes which are more expensive to heat. This is why most of the focus on energy efficiency improvements is on ‘retrofitting’ measures to existing older properties.
The ‘energy crisis’ from 2022 has highlighted the important role of energy efficiency in helping to reduce fuel poverty and the associated problems of households struggling to keep their homes warm and pay their energy bills.
26m Homes
26 million homes require decarbonisation upgrades between now and 2050. That equates to 900,000 homes per year, or 2466 homes per day, or 102 homes per hour, or 1.7 homes per minute, every minute for the next 30 years.
62% < EPC C
8 million homes in England (58%) and 460,000 in Wales (62%) have been rated below band C. The majority of existing housing stock is more than 60 years old and around 1 in 5 properties are more than 100 years old.
£12.6b Funding
The Government has has committed £6.6billion to improve energy efficiency to date, with a further £6billion commitment to follow in the period 2025-2028.
Zero Carbon Group were appointed to support us in the completion of a number of schemes which involved works to terraced and semi-detached homes of non-traditional concrete panel construction. The objective was to carry out extensive exterior enveloping works including installation of EWI and some internal alterations to improve energy efficiency and comfort for the occupants. Throughout this process, Zero Carbon Group proved they could deliver safely, on time, to specification and in accordance with budget. We look forward to working with them in the months and years to come.
